Goblin Town, Goblin Mode & Goblin Hands

Goblin Mode, Goblin Town, Goblin Hands and Goblins are all slang terms used to describe goblin-like behavior and people. Mainstream, social media and Crypto Twitter (CT) communities have all embraced and adopted many usages for these terms. Below we’ll define, examine and provide examples for each one.

Goblin Mode, Goblin Town & Goblin Hands

First, let’s explore the traditional definition of goblin from which all these terms derive.

A goblin is a type of fairy originally from European folklore. The word “goblin” is originally derived from the Greek word “Kobalos,” which translates into English as “Rogue” or “Evil Spirit.” Historically they have been ascribed various abilities, temperaments and appearances depending on the story. Traditional characteristics are diminutive, ugly fairies that are either mischievous or malevolent.

This was primarily the perception of goblins until J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit in 1937. Tolkien described the goblins as an ugly, monstrous, intrinsically-evil humanoid race of beings. In 1964 Marvel Comics introduced the super villain The Green Goblin. The Green Goblin drank a green serum which gave him superhero abilities but also had the side effect of causing him to lose his sanity, forcing wild mood swings and hallucinations. In yet another goblin interpretation, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books described goblins as a highly intelligent race of small magical humanoid beings with long fingers and feet that coexisted with the wizarding world.

Goblin Mode, Goblin Town, Goblin Hands and Goblins are all terms whose best interpretation applies to the more traditional definition of goblins. However, as we’ll show below social media continues to be creative and is inclusive of all interpretations of goblins.

Goblin Town

Goblin Town is a reference to the song “Down Down to Goblin Town” from the 1977 movie The Hobbit. In crypto terms, going to Goblin Town means the market (or specific coins) are going down significantly and liquidity, buy volume and speculation have dried up. Going Down to Goblin Town is a journey to the center of the earth and the opposite of going to the moon.

We have a message for the citizens of goblin town:

Your days are numbered.

Our orange battalions will overwhelm your defenses, and return your cities to the dirt

Your fields will be sown with salt, so that no future bearish thoughts will grow

Goblin

Goblins stay on the sidelines, aka underground, by changing crypto holdings to fiat or stablecoins and wait for a better price to buy back. This can be known as having goblin hands as well.

Even if the market did bottom here Goblins can call it a reasonable dub

but probably it wont

but maybe

but probably not https://t.co/i9UtBcmZ6m

Goblin Hands

Goblin Hands is similar to Goblins, a person who stays on the sideline in stablecoins or USD waiting for the market to go down to Goblin Town.

“The market is super volatile right now so I have Goblin Hands to buy the dip.”

Goblin Mode

Goblin Mode has several simultaneous slang meanings that have grown more and more prevalent especially with Crypto Twitter but also beyond. There is no clear-cut definition of what goblin mode actually is but here are several explanations and examples.

Goblin Mode 1: A state of human existence when an individual starts acting like a goblin e.g. mischievous, chaotic, and /or malicious behavior. This may include making weird noises, reclusive or animalistic behaviors, and/or having a disheveled appearance.

Goblin Mode 2: A particular format of the ‘cowgirl’ sex pose, where the topmost participant puts their knees up. Demonstrated below by none other the Spiderman villain The Green Goblin. Goblin mode is different than cowgirl.

Goblin Mode 3: Can be described as a full-on rejection of self-betterment or a person who is generally messy, likely unshowered and acting “feral” due to laziness or an aversion to going outside. The term encompasses the comforts of depravity. The opposite of #ThatGirl or #Cottagecore influence of early pandemic days. More succinctly they have resorted to becoming a goblin or goblin-like.

“I no longer care about what anyone thinks about how I look or what I say.”

““Can you explain this gap in your resume?” Yes, that was my goblin mode era.”

Examples Goblin Mode Include:

  • Mindlessly watching TV shows while scrolling social media and eating snacks
  • Leaving the house in pajamas, outfits that do not match, or without makeup
  • Making a strange snack at 2 am

Goblish

The language of Goblins. This started when the NFT project goblintown.wtf was launched and the creators starting speaking Goblish on Twitter and then eventually goblintown.wtf hosted a Twitter Spaces where everyone spoke in Goblish. The Spaces was just people making various goblin sounds the whole time. Here is the 3 hour long Twitter Spaces full link. We have just one word to say about this “ₐₐₐₐₐₐₐᵤᵤᵤᵤᵤGGGₕₕₕₕₕ”.

Goblia, Goblinacci, Goblinomics, etc.

Crypto Twitter is always creative but these terms are just derivatives of the previously defined terms above.
